A strong and damaging Santa Ana wind event is expected to occur across Southern California Friday into Saturday, with the strongest winds likely to occur Friday into Friday night. In the Los Angeles and Ventura County mountains, widespread damaging wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph are expected, while coastal and valley areas will likely see damaging wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph. With humidities expected to lower through the day on Friday, a Red Flag Warning will be in effect Friday into Saturday for coastal and valley areas of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. For the mountains, humidities will be at moderate levels on Friday, then are expected to lower to critical levels on Saturday when a Fire Weather Watch is in effect. The threat of strong Santa Ana winds with low relative humidities and the associated threat of downed power lines will bring extreme fire danger to the region. Upon ignition, there will be the potential for rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior. Other potential impacts include widespread downed trees and power outages, as well as hazardous driving conditions for high profile vehicles. This will be a cold Santa Ana wind event, with wind chills likely dipping into the 30s across portions of the coast and valleys on Friday night, with values into the single digits and teens across the mountains.
